Talking points for your community

Building support for raising revenues starts with bringing along your board members, staff, and constituents. The talking points on this page can help you explain why Minnesota’s tax system needs to change to generate the resources our communities need. They highlight the importance of asking those who have the greatest ability to contribute, including individuals and corporations that can afford to pay more to meet what this moment demands.

Talking points

  • Neighbor by neighbor, town by town, city by city – every great change in our country has started the same way. From neighbors stepping up for neighbors to nonprofits that build solutions from the ground up to meet immediate community needs, it’s Minnesotans who have moved us forward, toward a fairer, more just state.
  • Some people have sought to erase the story of how we’ve worked together across race and place, but our collective power across Minnesota is the real American Story.
  • The problem is that, right now, our federal tax code tells a very different one. Federal tax decisions too often primarily benefit corporations and the wealthy few, not the many.

    • Additionally, as of 2022, about one-third of the country’s wealth is held by just 1 percent of our population, and about three-quarters is held by the top 10 percent.
    • And last year, Congress passed a law that will transfer even more wealth to those who already have the most.
  • Federal tax decisions made last year provided an average tax cut of $52,370 in 2026 for the richest 1% of Minnesotans, compared to an average of just $240 for the 20% lowest-income households.
  • To pay for those tax cuts, Congress chose to make massive cuts to federal funding for Medicaid and SNAP food assistance.

    • In Minnesota, 109,000 people are at risk of losing health coverage by 2034, and an average of 18,000 additional SNAP recipients each month are at risk of losing food assistance and struggling to afford groceries because of those federal cuts.
  • We believe in a country where everyone – regardless of where they come from or where they live, new Minnesotan or native – can send their kids to strong public schools, drink clean water, and afford to pay for health care without worry.
  • And we’re calling for a state tax system that matches who we actually are and funds the public services and resources we need to build a strong, stable future for all our families, neighbors, and communities across Minnesota.
